Tractors are the backbone of mechanized agriculture in India. With increasing adoption of modern agricultural machinery, there is a critical need for trained personnel who can operate, maintain, and troubleshoot tractor systems effectively.

This 16-week hands-on skill development course offers comprehensive training in tractor engine mechanics, hydraulic systems, electrical and transmission components, and field operations. It is designed to build technical proficiency, diagnostic capability, and safety awareness, enabling participants to serve as skilled operators, service technicians, or machinery entrepreneurs.

Course Objectives

Participants will:

Gain in-depth understanding of tractor components and working principles

Learn operation, maintenance, and repair techniques for key tractor systems

Develop skills in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults

Practice safe operation in various field conditions

Explore entrepreneurship opportunities in agricultural machinery services

Prepare for employment in equipment service centres, dealerships, or farm enterprises

Course Structure

Duration: 16 weeks

Weekly Hours: 4 Hrs/week in two sessions of 2 hrs (Theory + Practical + Field Demonstrations)

Mode: Offline (on-campus)

Schedule: Part-time / Modular Option

Credits: 2 (0 + 2), transferable under technical/vocational programs

Course Modules

Tractor Engine Mechanics

Basic principles of internal combustion (IC) engines & and components

Cooling, Lubrication, Air Intake, Fuel Feed & Closed Loop Breathing Systems

Dismantling Engine Measurements of wear and tear of components

Valve Setting, and Assembling of Engine

Periodic Maintenance and troubleshooting of engine faults.

Transmission Systems

Types of transmissions: Constant Mesh, Synchromesh, Sliding Mesh,

Types of gear shifting mechanism, inter lock mechanisms, High and low unit,

Assembling & dismantling of Gear Box.

Power Take-Off (PTO) shafts and implement compatibility

Rear Transmission, Differential Unit, Pinion pre loading

Direct drive, Power drive, Planetary drive

Dismantling and assembly of Rear Transmission Unit.


Hydraulic Systems

Working principle, three-point linkages, hydraulic controls,

Components, Dismantling and assembly of Hydraulic pump

Hydraulic control valve’s functions.

Hydraulic lift cover assembly (HLC) Dismantling and assembly, Internal and External settings.


Clutch, Steering and Brakes Systems

Clutch system, Type of Clutch’s, Functions of the Clutch, Components of Clutch, Assembling and Dismantling of Clutch Cover, Clutch pedal free play setting.

Steering System, Parts of Steering System, Power Steering Functions

Braking System, Types of Brakes, Adjustment Procedure, Maintenance.


Electrical Systems

Battery, ignition, starter motor, alternator, fuse systems

Wiring diagrams and fault detection tools

Headlights, sensors, and control panel operations

Safe handling of electrical systems and battery maintenance


Tractor Operation & Safety

Pre-start inspection and field readiness checks

Operating procedures for different field tasks (ploughing, sowing, transport)

Methods of ploughing Constant ideal run method, Side by Side method, Gathering method, Casting Methods

Primary and Secondary Implements Handling and Maintenance.

Terrain handling, load balancing, and fuel efficiency techniques

Troubleshooting To identify the exact defect


Capstone Module: Diagnostic Skill Lab & Mini Project

Real-time fault diagnosis and rectification

Maintenance scheduling and service record preparation

Business model for tractor service, leasing, or hiring centre

Project presentation and peer review

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Proficiency in Tractor Technology: Operation & Maintenance from Kaveri University, with optional co-certification from industry partners or authorized service centre’s based on field training engagement.
