Dr. Rajendra Singh Paroda is one of India’s most distinguished agricultural scientists, visionary institution builders, and globally respected research administrators. He served as Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Secretary, DARE (1994–2001), where he played a transformative role in modernising India’s National Agricultural Research System (NARS), establishing over 30 national institutions, and strengthening agricultural research, education, and innovation infrastructure. He is widely regarded as the architect of India’s National Gene Bank in New Delhi.
A pioneering scientist, Dr. Paroda has made significant contributions to plant breeding, crop improvement, forage science, and genetic resource management. He has authored over 250 scientific publications and contributed to the development of several improved crop varieties. His work has focused on agrobiodiversity conservation, climate-resilient agriculture, and sustainable farming systems, along with influential publications addressing food security, agricultural transformation, and biotechnology-driven innovation.
Dr. Paroda has played a key global leadership role, serving as Founding Chairman of the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR) and Executive Secretary of APAARI. He is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Borlaug Award, FAO World Food Day Award, and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Lifetime Achievement Award. Currently, as Chairman of TAAS, he continues to shape agricultural policy through strategic initiatives focused on sustainability, farmer-centric innovation, and global competitiveness of Indian agriculture.
