Course Overview

This certification course is a competency-based, hands-on training program designed to build practical expertise across the seed value chain. Covering the full spectrum from floral biology and seed production to certification protocols and seed quality assurance. The course combines class room learning, laboratory practice, field immersion, and industrial apprenticeship.

With the active partnership of Kaveri Seeds, one of India’s leading seed enterprises, participants will gain industry-relevant exposure and be equipped to contribute to India’s evolving seed sector through roles in quality control, research, production management, and agri-entrepreneurship.

Course Objectives

Participants will:

Understand the science and principles underpinning seed development and quality

Gain practical skills in seed testing, processing, and handling

Learn the protocols and legal frameworks for seed certification in India

Experience industrial-scale seed operations via field visits and apprenticeships

Develop entrepreneurial insight and technical capability to launch seed ventures

Ideal for:

Undergraduate students (Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Allied Sciences)

Diploma holders in agriculture and related fields

Professionals working in the seed industry or agri-input sectors

Government and NGO personnel involved in seed systems and certification

Course Structure

Duration: 16 Weeks (One Semester)

Weekly Commitment: 4 hours (Theory + Practical + Fieldwork + Apprenticeship) in two sessions of 2 hours each

Mode: On-campus, flexible part-time schedule

Credits: 2 (0+2) — transferable under B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture curriculum

Course Modules

Practical Training

Floral dissection, pollination biology, and seed structure identification

Seed production practices: sowing, emasculation, controlled pollination, rouging

Off-type and pollen shedder identification; synchronization and Field inspections

Seed sampling procedures

Testing protocols: Physical purity, Moisture estimation, Germination, Viability, Vigour, Seed health

Seed treatment techniques and safety protocols


Industrial Apprenticeship

Hands-on lab work at ISTA-accredited QC lab, Kaveri Seeds

Apprenticeship at commercial seed processing units, Kaveri Seeds


Industry & Field Visits

Seed production plots (Paddy, Maize, Vegetable crops)

Polyhouse facilities

Cold storage and processing units

Grow-Out Test (GOT) fields

Visit to the State Seed Certification Agency


Theoretical Concepts

Floral biology and reproductive processes

Seed industry evolution in India

Foundation and certified seed production of major crops

Seed testing lab design, sampling standards, and analysis

Seed processing techniques: Drying, Grading, Packaging, Storage

Seed certification protocols, value chain management, and traceability (including blockchain applications)


Capstone Module

Preparation of a bankable project report for establishing a seed testing laboratory or enterprise

Assessment and Evaluation

Final written exam and capstone project presentation

Certification

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive a Certificate of Proficiency jointly issued by Kaveri University and Kaveri Seeds, subject to:.

Minimum 90% attendance

Satisfactory performance in practicals and final evaluation
