Program Description

India’s organic farming revolution is creating strong demand for sustainable nutrient sources—vermicompost being among the most preferred. According to the National Centre of Organic Farming (NCOF), vermicomposting is practiced across 3.5 million hectares in 19 states.

This 16-week practical, hands-on course is designed to empower participants with the skills to set up and manage vermicomposting units, ensure quality production, and explore entrepreneurial opportunities. It also provides insights into financial schemes such as those offered under the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) and NABARD.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

Select appropriate sites and construct efficient vermicomposting beds

Manage composting units with focus on productivity and hygiene

Produce both vermicompost and vermi-wash through guided practice

Identify compost maturity and ensure quality compliance

Prepare market-ready packaging and conduct local market analysis

Explore linkages to agri-entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihood programs

Target Audience

This course is designed for:

B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture students (particularly first-year)

Students with 10+2 or equivalent qualifications

Graduates from any discipline with an interest in sustainable farming

Individuals sponsored by NGOs, rural development organizations, or government programs

Course Duration and Mode

Duration: 16 weeks

Weekly Engagement: 4 hours (Practical + Demonstration + Field Sessions) in two sessions of 2 hours each.

Mode: On-campus, part-time/flexible

Credits: 2 (0+2)

Hands-on, immersive training includes:

Introduction to vermicomposting: Scope and enterprise potential

Site selection, shed and bed preparation

Earthworm selection, sourcing, and habitat management

Resource materials: Collection, pre-treatment, and layering

Composting process: Earthworm release and environmental monitoring

Maturity indicators and quality assessment (lab-based & field-based)

Relay production cycles, vermi-wash extraction and usage

Processing, packaging, branding, and quality labeling

Commercial unit visit and market survey

Preparation of a micro-enterprise business plan

Interaction with bankers, startup ecosystem stakeholders, and mentors

Final project presentation and report submission

Certification Eligibility: Minimum 90% attendance and successful project completion

Certification

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from Kaveri University, with optional co- certification from partnering industry organizations, subject to project evaluation and attendance criteria.

Led by experienced field practitioners from the University’s commercial vermicomposting facility, with expert inputs from:

Soil Science, Agronomy, Entomology, Microbiology, and Agri-Economics specialists

Industry professionals in organic inputs and sustainable agriculture

Mentors from rural entrepreneurship and cooperative development sectors

Fee Structure

Kaveri University B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture students: Included in the academic fee

External Participants: Fee determined based on duration, batch size, and infrastructure needs (flexible for institutional/NGO-sponsored groups)

Facilities and Support

Participants will access:

A fully operational commercial vermicompost unit

On-site microbiological and environmental monitoring systems

Exposure to lab-based quality control protocols

Placement and entrepreneurship support via the University Placement Cell and industry networks

Training is delivered by:

Credits Awarded: 2 (0+2), transferable under the B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture curriculum
