Dr. Kadiri Mahendra

A Catalyst for Innovation in Plant Health and Agricultural Biotechnology

Dr. Kadiri Mahendra is a plant pathologist, academician, and researcher with over a decade of experience in plant pathology, microbial biotechnology, biological disease management, and agricultural education. Currently serving as Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Plant Pathology, School of Agriculture, Kaveri University, he is actively engaged in teaching, research, laboratory development, and the advancement of biotechnology-driven approaches for sustainable crop protection. His professional journey encompasses academic and research positions at ANGRAU, ICAR-IIHR, and TNAU, providing him with extensive experience across both academic and applied agricultural research environments.

Dr. Mahendra’s research is centered on microbial biocontrol, plant–microbe interactions, molecular plant pathology, microbial genomics, bioactive metabolite discovery, and biological management of economically important plant diseases. His doctoral research investigated endophytic bacteria-mediated induction of in planta resistance against late blight of potato, leading to the identification of effective bacterial endophytes and the application of transcriptome analysis to understand differential expression of plant defense genes during di-trophic and tri-trophic interactions. His research portfolio integrates conventional plant pathology with advanced molecular and computational approaches, including whole genome sequencing, pan-genome analysis, transcriptomics, qRT-PCR, GC-MS metabolite profiling, molecular docking, bioinformatics, SCAR marker development, scanning electron microscopy, and laboratory- and field-level bio-efficacy studies.

A significant strength of Dr. Mahendra’s research is his work on microbial resources and next-generation biological disease management. He has established a bacterial culture bank comprising approximately 650 bacterial isolates, submitted more than 100 microbial DNA sequences to the NCBI database, and undertaken whole genome sequencing of 16 effective bacterial isolates. His research has explored Bacillus safensis, B. velezensis, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. subtilis, and Serratia marcescens through genomic and functional approaches. He has also investigated microbial secondary metabolites and their antagonistic activity against important pathogens including Phytophthora infestans, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, and Meloidogyne incognita, combining experimental and computational approaches to identify promising molecules and mechanisms for disease suppression.

His recent publication record demonstrates the growing depth and international relevance of his research. His publications include articles in Microbiological Research (2022), Indian Journal of Microbiology (2022), Molecular Biotechnology (2023), Physiological and Molecular Plant Pathology (2025), and Journal of Basic Microbiology (2025), alongside several other peer-reviewed contributions. Notably, his 2025 work includes whole genome sequencing of the rice endophyte Bacillus paralicheniformis NB stem 4 as a potential biocontrol agent against pearl millet blast, published in Physiological and Molecular Plant Pathology, and research on nonanol produced by Bacillus atrophaeus NMB01 as a potential novel formulation for management of potato late blight, published in Journal of Basic Microbiology. His 2023 publication in Molecular Biotechnology further demonstrates the application of computational analysis to investigate antagonistic activity of Bacillus velezensis against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense.

Dr. Mahendra’s research has also translated into intellectual property and technology-oriented innovation. He is associated with the U.S. patent application titled “Bio-fungicides formulations for inhibiting Phytophthora infestans and method thereof” (U.S. Patent Application 18/695,879; 2025). His earlier CV additionally records two Indian patent filings relating to bio-fungicide formulations and a novel method for isolation of Phytophthora infestans. His scientific work has contributed to important microbial genomic resources, including the first reported whole genome sequence deposit of the novel plant-origin microbe Sphingobacterium thalpophilum in NCBI and the first reported whole genome sequencing of Bacillus safensis from India.

Beyond journal publications, Dr. Mahendra actively contributes to the national and international scientific community. His recent scientific presentations include “From Local Innovation to Global Solution: Bacillus safensis TN1F2: A Microbial Marvel in the Fight Against Potato Late Blight” at the 14th NABS National Conference on Innovations in Biology and Biotechnology for their Application in Agriculture and Animal Science for Food Security (2025), and “Novel Encapsulation of Endophytic Bacteria and Trichoderma against Macrophomina in Beans” at the 61st Croatian and 21st International Symposium on Agriculture (2026). He has also contributed a book chapter on antimicrobial secondary metabolites from Trichoderma spp. as next-generation fungicides, further extending his scholarly contributions beyond research articles.

His scientific contributions have been recognized through several honours, including the Best Oral Presenter (2025), Dr. B.B. Mundkur Award (2023), PR Verma Ph.D. Student Award (2020), Prof. Krishna Sahai Bilgrami Best Poster Presentation Award (2019), Student Senior Research Fellowship (2019), and CAU Merit Scholarship (2013–14). With a strong commitment to teaching, mentoring, research, and innovation, Dr. Mahendra continues to develop biotechnology-based, environmentally sustainable solutions for plant disease management, while strengthening plant pathology education and research infrastructure at Kaveri University.

Kaveri University was established as per the Telangana Private Universities (Establishment & Regulation) Act, 2018 under section 3.
