Dr. S. Ramchander

A Champion of Genomics-Driven Crop Improvement

Dr. Ramchander Selvaraj is a distinguished Plant Breeder and academician with more than 12 years of research experience spanning conventional breeding, molecular breeding and genomics-assisted crop improvement, with a primary focus on rice. His interdisciplinary research portfolio encompasses genomic selection, haplotype-based breeding, molecular breeding, mutation breeding, stress breeding, quality breeding, biofortification, trait mapping and marker-assisted selection. His research is driven by the translation of genetic and genomic discoveries into practical breeding strategies for developing climate-resilient, nutritionally superior and high-performing crop varieties.

Dr. Ramchander has developed broad expertise in integrating phenomics, genomics, statistical genetics and molecular breeding for the improvement of complex traits. His work has addressed major challenges in rice production, including drought, salinity, submergence, blast, bacterial leaf blight and brown planthopper resistance, as well as nutritional quality and health-promoting traits. He has contributed to the marker-assisted introgression and pyramiding of multiple QTLs and genes, leading to the development of improved versions of elite rice cultivars such as CO43, CR1009 and Improved White Ponni, incorporating multiple stress-resistance traits through molecular breeding approaches. His work also encompasses mutation breeding and the development and characterization of promising rice mutants, including the semi-dwarf and early-duration mutants KKM-BRNS-12001 and KKM-BRNS-12004, as well as the development of the herbicide-tolerant mutant HTM1.

His research experience at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)–South Asia Hub and ICRISAT has provided him with extensive exposure to advanced crop-improvement methodologies. As a DST-SERB National Postdoctoral Fellow, he conducted research at the IRRI–South Asia Hub on the development of rice with high resistant starch and low glycemic index. This work integrated advanced phenotyping, GWAS, SNP discovery, QTL-seq, haplotype analysis and haplo-pheno analysis to identify superior genomic regions and functional haplotypes associated with nutritional and grain-quality traits. This research exemplifies his commitment to integrating cutting-edge genomics with practical breeding approaches for the development of healthier, more nutritious and climate-resilient staple crops. Dr. Ramchander is equally committed to teaching, student mentoring and academic development. His teaching portfolio encompasses Genetics, Plant Breeding, Crop Improvement, Seed Technology, Mutation Breeding, Molecular Genetics, Stress Breeding, Molecular Breeding, Bioinformatics, Plant Breeding Systems and Omics. He has undertaken academic coordination responsibilities and guided postgraduate students in Genetics and Plant Breeding, contributing to the development of skilled human resources in modern plant breeding and agricultural sciences.

His scholarly contributions include 24 international research papers, 41 national research papers and 17 popular articles, with publications in reputed journals including Rice, Plant Biotechnology Journal, Scientific Reports, PLOS ONE, Frontiers in Plant Science, Euphytica, Crop Science and Plant Breeding. He has also contributed as a reviewer for international scientific journals and has established research collaborations with scientists from IRRI, ICRISAT, TNAU, universities and other research institutions. Through the integration of conventional breeding, genomics, phenomics, molecular genetics and computational approaches, Dr. Ramchander Selvaraj is committed to advancing next-generation crop improvement. His overarching research vision is to develop climate-resilient, nutritionally superior and farmer-oriented crop varieties that can contribute meaningfully to food security, nutritional security and environmental sustainability in the face of emerging agricultural challenges.
